Phytotherapy is experiencing a moment of rediscovery. It is no longer knowledge restricted to folk traditions but a rapidly expanding scientific field, with increasingly well-understood mechanisms of action and robust clinical evidence.
"Phytotherapy is not an alternative to conventional medicine—it is an ally. Current scientific knowledge allows us to understand how bioactive plant compounds modulate specific biological pathways, offering valuable therapeutic options, provided they are used rigorously and safely."
Prof. Dr. Saulo Rios Mariz, Pharmacist-Biochemist, PhD in Natural and Bioactive Products, Mentor of the PET Phytotherapy program at UFCG.
Institutional recognition of this approach is growing significantly. The National Policy on Medicinal Plants and Herbal Medicines (PNPMF), established in 2006, set a fundamental guideline: "to ensure the Brazilian population has safe access to and makes rational use of medicinal plants and herbal medicines." Since then, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with institutions like Fiocruz, has invested in professional training—over 11,000 students and health professionals have already been trained in specific courses on the subject.
However, there is still a long way to go. A survey of 223 Nursing, Medicine, and Psychology students at the Federal University of Campina Grande revealed that the majority had never taken courses involving phytotherapy, even though most expressed interest in the subject and acknowledged its importance for their future professional practice. This educational gap can lead to a serious problem: health professionals who are unaware of drug interactions, contraindications, and appropriate dosages, making patient guidance potentially dangerous.
It is precisely to bridge this gap that this guide was created.
"Training professionals capable of prescribing and providing safe guidance on medicinal plants is one of the pillars of the PNPMF. We need professionals who understand phytochemistry, pharmacology, and, above all, the limitations and risks of phytotherapy." Dr. Claudia Barros Monteiro Vitorello, organizer of the booklet "Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy: Tradition and Science" (USP/ESALQ).
Safety is, in fact, the central theme uniting all authoritative voices in the field. As researchers from the UFCG Phytotherapy PET group warn, "the indiscriminate use of medicinal plants can pose significant risks to the body, especially when there are interactions with conventional medications or when used by vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly."
This preface would not be complete without a call for responsibility: phytotherapy is a powerful tool, but it is not without risk. The knowledge presented here should be applied with discernment and under the guidance of qualified professionals, while respecting the contraindications and limitations of each therapy.
Welcome to the Definitive Guide to Phytotherapy. May this work serve as an instrument of knowledge, safety, and transformation in your practice and your health.
