From the outside, John P. Boyle had it together: profitable businesses, a career on an upward trajectory, board meetings, sponsorships. Then came a spring morning in 2014 on a cafe patio on the Las Vegas Strip, when he ordered coffee, an English muffin, and a double screwdriver at seven-thirty in the morning. His hands were shaking. He was thirty-seven years old.

Hope That Anchors the Soul is the plainly told account of what Boyle calls a highly functioning, ultra-successful alcoholic: a man who could name every reason to stop and still could not stop. He traces the loop with unusual honesty. Anxiety surging in the middle of the night. One drink to get back to sleep. One drink becoming two. Less sleep, more anxiety, another drink.

He refuses the comfort of blame. Every drink, he writes, was his own decision. The unraveling that followed cost him weeks he cannot account for, a torn esophagus, malnourishment, and days he did not leave the house. His sister drove to his home, got no answer at the door, and assumed he was dead. It was she who finally said the word: detox. It was his son, Jack, turning eight, who got him off the floor. Boyle left for a Florida treatment facility six days before that birthday.

For most of his life, Boyle mistook hope for wishful thinking, and so went looking for it nowhere. Across eight chapters and an epilogue on forgiveness, he traces what he found instead: wounds he had never understood, a God who had been present in years he could not recognize Him, and a road home.

Written for anyone who has felt broken, forgotten, or burdened by what happened to them, this is a short, direct, deeply personal book about getting honest, asking for help, and discovering that freedom begins where the fighting stops.

Narrated by Patrick Kelly Shannon.
