Glennis Woldmont makes and mends nets on the docks of Almond Bluff, and she knows the one thing a net will never tell you from the boat. It looks whole from up top. Every mesh looks sound, the whole sheet of it hanging fair and even, right up until the haul comes on and the whole catch pours out through the one bad knot you could not see. You only find that knot the hard way, down on your knees, running the entire net through your hands foot by foot, until you feel the rotten mesh, and you cut it out and you tie it new by hand, and you do not call it whole again until it has held a real load. She has believed that at the bench her whole life. She learned it about her marriage the winter a boy drowned on her husband's run and Keaton went so far inside his own guilt that she finally put him out and did not come after him.
Seven months apart. She has a daughter to raise, a co-op to keep fed, and no room left to be a second thought. She knows about Etta, the sign-painter two slips down, and she has no intention of pretending it did not happen or of crawling back to a man who let their whole life rot at the kitchen table.
Then a Hill Country money man named Waylon Oakley decides the working waterfront would make a fine private marina, and he bankrolls the Ember Lantern to break the Thorn Line by fear. Vandalism, a burned boat, then an ambush that puts a good man in the ground. The fight for the docks and the wreck of Glennis's marriage turn out to be the same net, and the same question runs through both. What holds under load, and what was only ever a knot about to give.
Keaton Garridge, the Thorn Line officer they call Iron Wick, is not asking to be forgiven. He owns what he did with no excuse, no blaming the grief or the club or the woman, and when Waylon's own scheme hands him a reason to call himself a victim, he refuses it out loud. Winning his family back will not be done with words. It will be done by refusing to answer blood with blood, by reclaiming a code he abandoned, and by proving, deed by costly deed, that the new knot he tied by hand will hold, if Glennis ever decides to trust the net enough to put a load on it again.
A net looks whole from the boat. The only way to know is to run the whole thing through your hands, find the bad knot, tie it true, and put it under weight. Glennis knows exactly how to mend a net. Whether she and Keaton can mend the thing they broke, honestly and on her terms, is the whole question.
