The English Darby Version (often abbreviated as DBY) is a distinctive and influential translation of the Bible, officially titled The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages. Its principal translator was John Nelson Darby (1800–1882), a leading figure in the Plymouth Brethren movement and a formidable biblical scholar. Driven by a desire for doctrinal precision and textual fidelity, Darby produced a work that stands as a monument to 19th-century literal Bible translation.

The translation's defining characteristic is its extreme literalism. Darby's primary goal was to render the original Hebrew and Greek texts into English with as little interpretive smoothing as possible. He meticulously followed the grammatical constructions and word order of the source languages, often resulting in English that feels formal, stilted, or even awkward to modern readers. This choice, however, makes the version an exceptional tool for serious study, as it allows readers to glimpse the underlying syntax and verbal relationships of the original texts. It is particularly valued for analyzing epistolary passages and prophetic literature where precise terminology is crucial.

The translation is also a product of Darby's dispensationalist theology. Key terms are translated with rigorous consistency to reflect his theological framework. For instance, the Greek word ekklēsiais uniformly translated as "assembly" rather than "church," a distinction meaningful within Brethren teaching. The version exists in two main forms: the "English" edition (1890), which uses "LORD" for the divine name Yahweh, and the "German" edition, which uses "Jehovah." Both include numerous footnotes that offer alternative readings, textual criticisms, and explanations of translational choices, showcasing Darby's scholarly engagement.
