Callum has been moving for eleven days. Northeast, off highways, cash only, eating gas station food and sleeping in motels with chairs wedged under the door handles. The Voss Pack is gone — not diminished, not scattered. Gone. And whatever Callum is carrying is something he cannot afford to bring into the open, not with the Bratva's search radius expanding, not with his suppressants running out, not alone.

The Morretti border is his best option because it's the only option. The Bratva won't follow him onto Morretti land. They're efficient and thorough and even Gregor Volkov is not arrogant enough to poach on the Morretti's ground. All Callum has to do is cross four miles of Morretti territory in the dark without being caught and reach the road on the other side.

He has been, he will later think, almost correct.

The alpha who brings him down in the tree line near the Morretti compound is not who Callum expected. Not brutal. Not a man who needs violence to establish what he is. He is the kind of man who lets the silence do it. He looks at Callum on the frozen forest floor with the flat evaluation of someone who has already made several assessments and is waiting on one more.

What he smells is not what Callum has been trying to hide. Or rather — it is exactly that, and there is nothing the suppressants can do about it at this stage, and the alpha's face does something complicated and then goes still.

Protective instinct is not the same as sentiment. Callum knows this. He's been in enough pack structures to understand that an alpha claiming a fated mate is not the same thing as an alpha choosing to be kind. But the cold, and the Bratva behind him, and the thing he's been protecting alone for too long — he doesn't have a better option.

Neither, it turns out, does the alpha.
