Laurel Inkstone reads snow the way other people read faces. She is the forecaster for the pass above Tulley Bluff, the one who kneels in a cut pit with her glove off and finds the weak layer nobody else can see, the buried hoar that looks like nothing from the surface and takes the whole slope down when it lets go. She learned to read the hidden fault the hard way. Three years ago she watched her husband choose his outlaw club over her, push her out to keep his patch, go silent, and never come back. Two weeks later the photographs arrived, proof that Beckett Pryceley had gone to another woman, and Laurel took what was left of herself and their unborn daughter and got off the mountain for good.
Now the deepest snowpack in a generation is loading toward a historic slide cycle, the county needs its forecaster back on the pass, and Beckett, road name Iron Girder, is standing square in the path of a deal that will bury the town. Laurel has ten days. Ten days to read the mountain, to keep a two-year-old he has never met clear of what is coming, and to decide whether a betrayal buried three years deep can ever be trusted to hold weight again, before a rigged reckoning and an extreme avalanche window arrive on the very same hour.
Because the photographs were a frame. Beckett never touched that woman. The club's own treasurer, a man called Ledger, drugged him blackout and staged the whole night to sever the one bond that could ever see the plot coming, then sent the pictures to make sure Laurel never looked back. But the frame is only the lie. Under it sits the true betrayal, the one Beckett owns with no excuse and no absolution: he chose the cut, he stayed silent, he let his pride rule everything, and he never once fought for her. Exposing the frame does not erase that. It only clears the ground he has to earn back.
Laurel does not swoon and she does not fold. She has learned the difference between being protected and being managed, and she will not be lied to a second time, not even in kindness. If Beckett wants back into her life he does not get to buy it with the old easy pull between them. He has to do it in the open, in deeds that cost him his standing, his patch, and his safety, on her terms and her clock, while the man who tore their family apart still holds a match to everything they have left, and the mountain keeps loading toward the hour it all comes due.
