Hayao Miyazaki: Beyond Imagination: The Life of a Man Who Never Stopped Drawing

Hayao Miyazaki created some of the most unforgettable worlds in modern animation. Behind them is the story of a man shaped by war, fascinated by flight, devoted to drawing, and unwilling to accept simple answers about people, nature, or progress.

Born in Tokyo in 1941, Miyazaki grew up surrounded by the contradictions that would later define his work: beautiful aircraft built for war, a rapidly changing Japan, family illness, and a childhood imagination filled with machines, books, and drawings.

From his early years at Toei Animation and his creative partnership with Isao Takahata to the founding of Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki gradually developed a form of storytelling unlike anything around him. Films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Boy and the Heron would eventually reach audiences around the world.

But his life was never simply a story of success.

Miyazaki could be demanding, pessimistic, stubborn, and endlessly dissatisfied with his own work. He announced his retirement more than once, only to return to the drawing table when another idea refused to leave him alone.

Hayao Miyazaki: Beyond Imagination follows the artist behind the films—from a boy watching airplanes in wartime Japan to an elderly filmmaker still searching for the next drawing.

It is a story about imagination, discipline, contradiction, and a lifetime spent creating worlds while never losing sight of the complicated one outside the studio.
