• God Loves Hair was first self-published by Vivek Shraya in 2010; Arsenal took over publication in 2013, which became one of our first young adult titles, and set the stage for four other collaborations with Vivek over the years, in addition to her VS. Books series of books by emerging BIPOC writers.
• God Loves Hair was widely acclaimed the first time around; it received a starred review from Booklist and was shortlisted for a Lambda Literary Award, has been embraced by the library community, and has been used consistently in high school and college classrooms. The book was (and is) a rare and refreshing examination of racial, gender, and religious diversity from a young (Indian) person’s perspective.
• The 2013 Arsenal edition ISBN is now out of print (9781551525433).
• This new edition is HARDCOVER for the first time. It also includes a foreword by award-winning Indigenous writer Cherie Dimaline (the YA novel The Marrow Thieves ), who writes: “God Loves Hair is the book every child should know exists, that every person should read, but not too fast, though that compulsion is almost impossible to hold back. It is one of those rare offerings that circles many issues -- from bullying to shame, self-preservation to family history -- all from inside the very eye of the storm that is adolescence.”
• Ages 12 and up.
