Biografier

Ginger Baker was one of the most innovative, explosive, and unpredictable musicians in rock history. Best known as the drummer for Cream, he transformed the role of the rock drummer through immense power, complex rhythms, extended improvisation, and a musical imagination rooted as deeply in jazz and African music as in blues and rock and roll.

Born Peter Edward Baker in South London, he discovered the drums almost by accident, but his extraordinary natural ability quickly became apparent. He emerged from Britain’s postwar jazz and blues scene, performing with Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated and the Graham Bond Organization before joining Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce to form Cream in 1966. Cream became one of rock’s first supergroups, producing landmark recordings and concerts that changed the direction of popular music. Yet behind the group’s success lay fierce personal conflict, particularly between Baker and Bruce. Their volatile relationship helped give Cream its dangerous intensity while also contributing to its rapid collapse. After Cream, Baker and Clapton formed Blind Faith with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. Baker later pursued increasingly adventurous projects, traveling to Nigeria, working with Fela Kuti, and immersing himself in African rhythms. He rejected the label of rock drummer, insisting that he was fundamentally a jazz musician whose work had been misunderstood.

His private life was as turbulent as his music. Addiction, financial disaster, broken relationships, violent confrontations, and constant relocation followed him across several continents. Beneath the anger and notoriety, however, stood a fiercely committed artist who refused compromise and demanded recognition for the African and jazz traditions that shaped his playing.
