Romantik
Rourke had a rule about the phone. It stays face-down on the bench, and if it lights up, it waits until his hands are clean.
Three years, that rule held. Three years of jobs he didn't put his name on, towns where he never learned the waitress's name, a rented room in Arizona where nobody asks a quiet man twice. He'd have told you the rules were about staying gone. Keeping the target moving.
But a man doesn't build that many walls to keep the world out. He builds them to keep one thing in.
Eleven hundred miles north, a stranger walks into Beckett Calloway's tattoo shop forty minutes before close. No ink. No name. The stillness of somebody who used to do the watching for a living. He leaves a card on the glass counter, two fingers pressing it flat so it sticks: black stock, one thin white line cut diagonal across the middle, the kind of mark you'd call a printing flaw if you didn't know better.
Beck knows better. He's seen it exactly once before.
Three years ago. The week Rourke rode out of Catamount without a word and took every good thing in Beck's life with him.
Here is what Beck was never told. There was a run, and it went wrong, and a man died who wasn't supposed to. Three weeks later, in a bar in Coeur d'Alene, someone sat across a table from Rourke, calm as church, and explained how to make it even. He didn't say Rourke's name.
A man who wants to hurt you doesn't aim at the armor. He says the name of the soft place.
He said Beckett.
So Rourke did the only arithmetic he knew: he made himself the target and rode. Three years of ghost work, of loving somebody by leaving him, and never once giving him a vote in it.
Now the Black Divide is back in Catamount, there's a deadline ticking, and the only way Rourke knows to save Beck's life is the exact thing Beck will never survive twice.
A slow burn. Low steam, high ache, a brotherhood that never stopped setting his place at the table, and a happily-ever-after that is never in question.
There's a card on the counter in chapter one. Beck leaves it lying there a good while, because picking it up feels like agreeing to something.
Pick it up anyway.
