Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Władysław Czachórski, Wojciech Gerson and Witold Pruszkowski. Tales from Georgia collected in the 1890s: the king's son who sought the water of life, the fox and the hare, the master and the pupil, and stories of the deeds of hero-kings. Marjory Wardrop learned Georgian in order to translate it and produced the first English versions of the country's literature. The tales are unlike anything in Europe, and her plain prose lets them stay that way. Sixty plates of Caucasus peaks, horsemen and mountain light by painters including Ivan Aivazovsky and Wacław Pawliszak carry the tales' wild landscape across the centuries.
