Nats Chat

The Nats slugged five homers on Saturday night for a 7-3 win at Dodger Stadium. Mark (From L.A.) & Al marvel at James Wood as he crushed his 21st homer of the season; which is tied for 4th most in the NL. Wood's 1st inning majestic shot went an estimated 451 feet.

(06:00) All of the top four Nationals hitters cleared the fences, with Nathaniel Lowe doing it twice. The offense totaled ten hits and eight of them were for extra bases.

(12:30) Keibert Ruiz went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles. It is the first time since April 22nd that Ruiz had multiple doubles in the same game.

(15:00) Washington pitchers combined for 11Ks in the victory. Jake Irvin had seven of them while not issuing any walks in his outing.

(19:30) Jose A. Ferrer retired all five batters he faced and Mark points out how inconsistent he can be on the mound.

(24:10) Kade Anderson, star LSU pitcher, threw a complete game shutout on Saturday night at the College World Series. Anderson is projected by some to go to the Nats with the top overall pick at next month's Draft.

Wood, Lowe, & the Nats Smack 5 Homers in L.A. Win

Friday night was a long one in Navy Yard as the Nats lost their 6th consecutive game. Mark & Al discuss the 11-9 defeat to visiting Miami, on an evening that saw a 2+ hour rain delay and the final out made at about 12:30AM.

(04:30) Mitchell Parker's rough stretch continued as he gave up six runs in just over three innings of work. Davey Martinez was critical of Parker's fastball approach afterwards as the lefty's ERA is now up to 4.84.

(09:00) Jose A. Ferrer had a poor showing in the top of the 8th when giving up three Miami runs. It was particularly deflating because this came after a big Nats inning that saw them cut the deficit to just one run after scoring five runs in the bottom of the 7th.

(13:45) The offense did have their best game in awhile by scoring nine runs off of 16 hits. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit.

(14:30) James Wood had three hits and crushed his 17th homer of the season that went an estimated 451 feet. CJ Abrams & Keibert Ruiz joined Wood in gathering a trio of hits on Friday night.

(17:20) Nelly did indeed perform his postgame concert and it began at roughly 1:15PM. Mark says that many in attendance waited through the long delay to see the concert.

(21:25) Trevor Williams takes the mound on the quick turnaround for the 1PM game on Saturday as Washington looks to avoid their 7th straight defeat.

Parker Hit Hard in 6th Straight Loss

The Nats dropped Thursday's rubber match 7-1 to the visiting Cubs as Ian Happ knocked in four runs. Al & Mark sort through the sloppy affair, another example of poor defense & base running in defeat.

(04:30) James Wood has a hard luck 0 for 4 evening despite every ball he hit having an exit velocity over 97 MPH.

(09:20) Why is Davey Martinez not bothered by base running miscues?

(12:45) Jake Irvin allowed three runs in five innings of work. Irvin immediately gave up a 2-run homer to Pete Crow-Armstrong; emblematic that he too has 1st inning struggles like some of his teammates.

(17:35) Jackson Rutledge gave up a 2-run Happ HR in the top of the 6th and his season has gone sideways a bit recently.

(25:00) A familiar face will take the mound on Friday night when Patrick Corbin gets the start for Texas vs. Michael Soroka. Corbin is pitching better for the Rangers than he did last year in Washington, but the hosts explain why a regression to the mean might be around the corner for the veteran lefty.

Happ & the Cubs Take the Series Finale

The Nats five game win streak was snapped in Friday night's 4-0 loss to the visiting Giants. Mark & Al focus on MacKenzie Gore's status as he exited in the middle of an at- bat in the top of the 7th. Davey Martinez said afterwards that Gore is fine and it simply was a "Charley Horse" from a comebacker that Gore fielded in the bottom of the 2nd.

(07:00) Gore struck out nine Giants to extend his MLB lead to 93Ks on the season. The only run charged to the lefty was the leadoff batter in the top of the 7th, who came across the plate after Gore had left the mound. Gore was much more pitch efficient on Friday night as he was at 83 pitches through six innings of work.

(13:35) Daylen Lile singled on the first pitch he saw as he hit 9th and played RF in his MLB debut. Lile was called up from Rochester due Jacob Young being placed on the 10-day IL with a sprained left shoulder. Lile spent April in AA-Harrisburg and immediately made an impact when given the opportunity in AAA.

(23:10) The offense could not get anything going as CJ Abrams & James Wood combined for an 0 for 8 effort. Luis Garcia Jr. was the only Nat to collect two hits against San Francisco's Landon Roupp and crew.

(25:40) Four relievers were needed and none excelled. Zach Brzykcy allowed a pair of runs in an inning of work and his ERA is up to 11.12 in seven Big League appearances.

Shutout Despite Gore's Great Outing

Tim gives a quick update on what you need to know as the Nats & Braves game was officially postponed at about 5PM on Wednesday.

NATS & BRAVES RAINED OUT: DOUBLEHEADER IN MID SEPTEMBER

The Nats and Guardians were rained out on Monday and will play a traditional doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3:35PM.

MONDAY NIGHT RAINED OUT: DOUBLEHEADER TUESDAY

The Nats did not have effective pitching in their 7-6 loss on Saturday afternoon in Miami. Al recaps the not so pretty totals for Trevor Williams, who allowed six runs off of eight hits, before getting pulled in the bottom of the 5th. Williams so far on the season is sporting a 7.36 ERA.

(06:00) The bullpen did not allow a run on Friday night for the first time all season, but that luck did not carry over into Saturday. Colin Poche allowed. Marlins run across, but the trio of relievers that followed him did not allow a further run. Al points out the grisly stats so far for the lefty Poche, who pitched for Tampa Bay last year.

(10:05) Washington's offense only had singles despite scoring six runs. Keibert Ruiz had three hits while hitting third in the order and leads the team with a .985 OPS.

(13:00) Alex Call drew a pair of walks in the loss and has walked a staggering nine times out of 37 plate appearances this season. 

(17:15) CJ Abrams has been placed on the 10-day IL due to a hip flexor strain. Abrams left Friday night's game early after re aggravating the injury that kept him out of the lineup earlier in the week.

Abrams to the IL Before Loss in South Florida

The Nats clubbed the Phillies 9-1 on Friday night to end their four game skid. Mark & Al recap Stone Garrett's "too good to be true" evening as he fell a triple shy of the cycle in his first Big League game since August of last season. Garrett broke his leg last year and spent the bulk of this season with AAA-Rochester.

(13:30) Trevor Williams tossed five shutout innings in his 2nd start since returning from the IL. The hosts look at what the chances are that he is back in the team's rotation next season. His ERA after 13 starts is 2.03, the lowest of his career.

(21:00) Mike Rizzo spoke with the media prior to the game and among the topics addressed were CJ Abrams, offseason spending, and more.

(27:00) Luis Garcia Jr. won the Nationals Player of the Year Award as voted on by the media. Garcia led the team in OPS and was 2nd in homers with 17. What would have happened if the vote had gone to Abrams instead?

Stone Garrett Immediately Homers in Easy Win

The Nats lost 7-6 on Thursday night in Chicago for their 4th consecutive defeat. Mark (From Wrigley Field) & Al react to Washington falling to 17 games below .500 for the first time this season.

(05:00) CJ Abrams had a magnificent game as he had four hits, two of which were doubles, and a pair of stolen bases.

(12:45) Darren Baker got his first career start at a stadium that he grew up at and he responded with a trio of hits. Baker sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" at The Friendly Confines when he was a four year old child when his dad was the Cubs Skipper.

(16:05) Jacob Young was thrown out trying to steal 2nd Base and exited early due to a shoulder injury. Young was replaced in the lineup by Joey Gallo, who later connected with a three-run homer.

(23:20) Patrick Corbin took the loss in what will likely be his second to last start in a Nationals uniform. Corbin has a slew of statistics that show he is yet again one of the worst starting pitchers in Baseball.

(33:00) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives an update on the AAA team in their final week of play. Hear the latest on players such as Brady House, Trey Lipscomb, and Robert Hassell III.

Skid Extends to 4

The Nats lost 8-3 to the Cardinals on a scorching Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital. Al & Mark begin the show by discussing how the pitching staff is clearly fatigued during this stretch of 17 games in 17 days. DJ Herz did not have a good outing as he allowed five runs in less than five innings of work. Herz was lifted after 102 pitches and four relievers were needed behind him.

(14:00) James Wood singled and drew a pair of walks in the loss. Wood so far has been walked six times in seven games and this seems like this might become a pattern for the rookie.

(20:00) CJ Abrams is the team's lone representative at this month's All-Star game. Abrams leads the Nats in almost every offensive statistical category including OPS at .859. Mark notes that CJ has been Washington's lead-off hitter for a full calendar year now.

(24:00) Jake Irvin however was snubbed from the National League roster and Al points out how this is a mistake. Irvin ranks 4th in WHIP in the NL and is tied for 2nd in pitching WAR.

(31:00) Brady House has been promoted to play 3B at AAA-Rochester one day after Trey Lipscomb was promoted back to the Nationals. Could House be on the 2025 Opening Day roster?

(36:00) Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, join Nats Chat for the fourth consecutive year. Bob tells Tim about Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, the only female pitcher in Negro Leagues history. Mamie lived for many years in the DMV before passing away in 2017.

Abrams the All-Star & House Moves Up to AAA

The Nats came back on the Pirates 3-2 as Maikel Franco hit a game winning 2 run HR in the bottom of the 8th. Al discusses how they struggled with runners in scoring position all night until Franco came through late as the Nats have now won five of their past seven games. The boys ultimately stranded ten runners on base in the victory.

(11:20) Erick Fedde allowed two runs in five frames, keeping the team in it despite exiting with a 2-0 deficit. It goes down as a quality start, which the staff has recorded in seven of the past eight games. The bullpen stepped up with four scoreless innings, including the notable decision to pitch Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th as opposed to Tanner Rainey.

(23:10) Davey Martinez was named to the coaching staff for next month's All Star Game. This seems like a gesture from Atlanta's Brian Snitker to recognize Martinez for having missed the opportunity to manage the 2020 affair.
