She innocently tells him a tragic tale about her aunt’s husband and brothers, died hunting, leaving the living room's tall windowed doors open hoping for their ghostly return.

Prosper Mérimée's 1829 short story Mateo Falcone is a Corsican tragedy about absolute honor. A ten-year-old boy, Fortunato, betrays a wounded fugitive for a soldier's watch. Upon returning, his father, Mateo, faces the decision to punish this treachery by marching his son into the mountains, and shooting him to restore family honor.

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe (1843) is a gothic, first-person narrative where an unreliable narrator attempts to convince listeners of his sanity while describing how he murdered an old man. Driven by an obsession with the man's "vulture-eye," he meticulously plans the killing, dismembers the body, and hides it under the floorboards. When the police arrive to question him he is certain he can avoid any consequences simply by telling them what he wants despite a strange sound in the room they do not seem to hear.
