After trauma, solid ground can be hard to find.
A slammed door, an unanswered message, a difficult conversation, or a sensation in your own body can trigger panic, anger, shutdown, or the urgent need to escape. You may know that a reaction is being shaped by the past, yet “just calm down” offers no practical way forward.
Finding Ground After Trauma is a compassionate, action-focused DBT workbook for rebuilding safety, regulating intense emotions, and reconnecting with everyday life.
Instead of asking you to relive your entire story—or cover pain with positive thinking—this workbook helps you work with what is happening now. You will learn to assess actual safety, recognize the sequence behind automatic reactions, reduce emotional urgency, communicate more clearly, and choose the next effective action.
Inside, you will learn how to:
• Distinguish a trauma reminder from present danger without dismissing your instincts • Map the chain from trigger to interpretation, body response, urge, action, and consequence • Use mindfulness, distress-tolerance, emotion-regulation, and interpersonal-effectiveness skills • Apply STOP, TIPP, 5–4–3–2–1 grounding, DEAR MAN, GIVE, and FAST—with practical safety cautions • Set boundaries, make requests, and protect self-respect during difficult conversations • Repair ruptures without confusing accountability with self-punishment • Measure progress through recovery time, safer choices, and restored functioning • Build a personalized maintenance plan, support menu, and crisis-response route • Recognize when self-help is not enough and professional care is needed
The book is organized into three clear parts:
PART I — UNDERSTAND THE TERRAIN Begin with safety, understand trauma-related patterns, and establish an honest baseline without judging yourself.
PART II — PRACTICE THE SKILLS Start smaller than you think, work through common obstacles, communicate effectively, and apply the framework to realistic situations.
PART III — INTEGRATE AND MAINTAIN Build your core toolkit, work with resistance, track what matters, protect your gains, and create a practical thirty-day plan.
A quick-reference appendix gives you a concise safety plan, grounding prompts, communication scripts, a weekly check-in, key terms, provider questions, and crisis guidance for moments when reading a full chapter is too much.
This workbook is well suited to survivors seeking structured self-guided practice, readers already working with a therapist, and anyone who wants concrete skills instead of vague encouragement. It is educational and does not replace diagnosis, psychotherapy, medical care, or emergency help.
Trauma can narrow life one automatic response at a time. Recovery begins by finding the next point of choice.
Start where you are. Choose one safe, workable step. Find your ground.
