My husband's radio stuck open for twenty-three minutes, and I heard every word he has never once said to me.

I run dispatch for the Deadfall MC. In February I'm the voice that talks men home through whiteouts — I've kept half this club breathing for six years, and I have never once been the one who needed finding.

Then a handheld jammed live on my channel. A kitchen forty minutes north. A kettle. A chair going back over bad linoleum. My husband laughing at something a woman said, low, the way he laughs when he means it. And then calling her a name nobody has ever called anybody in front of me.

He never touched her. He'll swear that, and he'll be telling the truth, and it will not save him. Because he told her about the ice. He told her about two in the morning. He told her the thing he has never told a living soul — and I sat eleven miles away with a headset on and no way to answer.

A held channel is a held channel. I could hear him. I could not speak.

I got twenty-three minutes. And I got one sentence I still cannot put down.

She has a right to know what I did.

Not this. Not what I'm doing. What I did — finished, past tense, with a date on it.

The woman at that table is my brother's widow. My brother went through the ice eleven months ago and this club buried him as a thief. Every man in that yard has known about her since July. Not one of them told me. I am starting to understand why.

Everything in my room gets written down. My father built it that way. Six years of times and units and dispositions, in my own handwriting, in a locked cabinet, in a building thirty-one men have keys to.

I'm going to read every page.

Nothing happened. That's what he keeps telling me. It's the worst thing he's ever said to me in his life.
