Nell Vasquez-Reid can hear a lie the way other people hear a wrong note. Thirty-one years in insurance investigation have taught her that the people who confess fastest are usually protecting something else.

None of it has ever applied at home. Four days before her wedding, in a restaurant parking lot, Owen told her there was a thing he did on Thursdays — every third one — that it wasn't another woman, that it wasn't illegal, and that he would never ask her about it. She said okay. She has said okay for nineteen years, and she has called it respect.

Then a nurse at a care home sixty miles away calls their house, asking for a man who isn't quite her husband.

What Nell finds takes her four weeks and costs her more than she can calculate — a woman who has been in a bed in Franklin since 2006, a company her husband registered four months before he ever met her, and a son who has spent two years working out who has been paying. And in Virginia, she discovers, a felony has no expiry date. Not at nineteen years. Not ever.

But the thing Owen has been protecting is not the thing she thinks, and when she finally understands what he did — and what he did again, five years later, on a step in their own carport — the question stops being whether she can forgive him.

It becomes whether she has any right to.
