Erewhon, Or Over The Range

"Erewhon, or Over the Range" is a novel by Samuel Butler, first published anonymously in 1872. This satirical work is a forerunner in the science fiction genre, blending fantasy, philosophy, and social commentary. The story is set in Erewhon, a fictional country discovered by the protagonist, Higgs, during an exploratory trip in a remote area. Erewhon is depicted as a society with inverted customs and laws, where illness is considered a crime and criminality is treated as an illness. This reversal serves as a critique of Victorian norms and the hypocrisy of societal values. The novel delves into various themes, including the absurdity of conventional wisdom, the quirks of human nature, and the impact of technology. Particularly notable is Butler's prescient critique of the potential dangers of machine dependence, seen in the "Book of the Machines" chapters, which speculate on the evolution and potential dominance of machines over humanity. "Erewhon" is celebrated for its imaginative vision, witty satire, and its thought-provoking take on the relationship between society, morality, and technology.
