Egyptian Myth And Legend

Egyptian Myth and Legend is a study of ancient Egyptian mythology written by Donald Alexander Mackenzie, first published in 1907. It presents a structured retelling of Egyptian religious beliefs, gods, creation stories, and funerary traditions based on translations of ancient texts available at the time. The book covers the major figures of Egyptian mythology, including gods such as Ra (the sun god), Osiris (god of the afterlife), Isis (goddess of magic and motherhood), and Horus (the divine falcon and avenger of Osiris). It explains how these deities were connected to natural forces, kingship, and the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. A significant portion of the work focuses on the Osiris myth, one of the central narratives in Egyptian religion. This story describes Osiris's murder by his brother Set, his resurrection by Isis, and the eventual rise of Horus, symbolizing order overcoming chaos and the promise of life after death. Mackenzie also discusses Egyptian views of the afterlife, including the journey of the soul through the underworld (Duat), the judgment of the dead, and the importance of moral conduct, which was believed to affect one's fate after death.
