A massive object appears overnight at the edge of a rural woodlot, and the Army moves quickly to secure the site. Keith Laumer (1925–1993) was an American science fiction writer and former U.S. Air Force officer whose fiction frequently drew on military experience and diplomatic service. His best-known works include the long-running Retief stories about an irreverent interstellar diplomat, along with novels such as Bolo and A Plague of Demons. Laumer’s shorter fiction appeared widely in magazines including Galaxy Science Fiction, If, and Analog, where he became known for combining sharp wit with fast-moving speculative scenarios.
