Charles Rowland Johns (1882-1961) was secretary of the National Canine Defence League from 1909 to 1946, and he knew a great many of the dogs in Dogs You'd Like to Meet personally. Here is Bolo, the war dog; the Scottish swimmer and the Irish hero; the fire-fighting Jack; the child-saver and thief-catcher; the sheep-stealer; and a Chinese film dog with a story of his own. Each account is short, plainly told, and true.

Johns was awarded the RSPCA's Silver Medal for Meritorious Service in 1936, and this book belongs to the tradition of humane, affectionate dog writing that he did more than anyone in Britain to create.
