Historie

Antigonus was arguably the most powerful of the Diadochi near the end of the 4th century B.C., and he was the first successor of Alexander the Great to establish himself as king of Macedon, but it was mostly made possible by the military exploits of his son, Demetrius I, widely known as Poliorcetes ("the Besieger of Cities"). One of the most compelling, charismatic, and complex figures of the era, Demetrius earned his famous nickname not by chance, but during his massive siege of Rhodes from 305-304 B.C., where he showcased his extraordinary engineering skills and his use of colossal siege engines such as the great tower known as the Helepolis (“Taker of Cities”). Ancient writers also took note of the seeming split in his character: in peacetime, he gave himself over to extravagant luxury and wild celebrations, imitating the myth of Dionysus among mortals, whereas in combat, he showed sober, resolute, and ruthless energy.

Demetrius the Besieger’s historical importance is undeniable, despite the fact so many contemporaries attempted to deny it. Together with his father, he established the Antigonid dynasty that ruled much of Greece for over a century, but given that he lost control of Macedon and the other Diadochi emerged with more powerful and enduring kingdoms, Demetrius and Antigonus are not as well remembered. Moreover, historical narratives, shaped largely by the moralistic judgment of Plutarch, often played down Demetrius’s martial abilities and painted him as a tyrant whose results never matched his ambitions.

Nonetheless, even if the man himself has mostly been forgotten, his military legacy cast an incredibly long shadow. According to Diodorus, who was no fan of Demetrius, “[I]t was in his time that the greatest weapons were perfected and engines of all kinds far surpassing those that had existed among others; and this man launched the greatest ships after this siege and after the death of his father.
