Collecting Ukiyo-e Prints & Asian Art: The complete guide for enthusiasts and collectors

A practical guide to collecting Japanese prints with a method rather than on instinct. Works by Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro reach valuations in the tens of thousands, yet the market is full of late reproductions and forgeries that are hard to spot: this book teaches you to tell them apart.

It starts with how to read a print: the paper and its grain, publisher and censor seals, the artist's signature, the marks left by original woodblock printing as opposed to photomechanical reproduction. From there it moves to periods — original Edo editions, Meiji reprints, contemporary strikes — and to what actually changes in value between them.

The central section covers condition and the market: how condition is judged, how much fading, damp staining and restoration weigh, where to buy and on what terms, how to read an auction listing without being carried away by the bidding.

The closing chapters take the long view: which subjects and which masters hold their value, how provenance is documented, how to build a coherent collection rather than an accumulation of unrelated pieces. With checklists and valuation criteria at every stage.
