Biografier
The first substantial life of Charlotte Brontë after Gaskell's: Haworth, the school at Cowan Bridge, Brussels, the three books and the year of marriage. Wemyss Reid was a newspaper editor with access to letters Gaskell had not seen, and published in 1877 to correct her portrait. He is the first to argue that Charlotte was an artist rather than a victim. Fifty-nine plates, among them Constable's Brighton chain pier and Turner's boatyard at Flatford, set the Regency and Victorian world Charlotte Brontë moved through alongside her text.
