Laura is nineteen, motherless, and alone but for her father and two governesses in a castle no one visits. Carmilla is the guest who never quite explains herself: languid, ardent, awake only after dark. Laura cannot decide whether she is being courted or consumed. In the villages below, young women are dying of a wasting illness the doctors cannot name, and Laura's own dreams have begun to bleed into her waking hours...

J. Sheridan Le Fanu published Carmilla in 1872: the first great lesbian vampire story in English, a Victorian gothic built on a woman’s desire for a woman. It survived a century that would have preferred it forgotten.
