Candyass is a highly contemporary queer novel that joins our list of acclaimed LGBT literary titles such as When Everything Feels like the Movies by Raziel Reid, God in Pink by Hasan Namir, and Mouthquake by Daniel Allen Cox (who is Nick Comilla’s mentor).
Arthur is the book’s protagonist; in his early twenties, he explores his sexuality and makes up for what he considers to be lost time. He is perpetually caught between two conflicting desires – the desire to be in love and to experience devotion, and the desire to explore and be free. Arthur’s questionable decision-making and chaotic romantic entanglements exemplify today’s young people growing up and coming of age in the digital generation, when feelings and impulses flicker and fade faster than a Snapchat. Arthur yearns for authenticity in a sea of superficial fakery.
The author himself is in his twenties and based the novel on much of his own experiences. The novel feels very much of “the moment”; the writing has a beguiling urgency to it, and pulses with the energy of young urban experience.
