"By One, By Two, and By Three", first published in Temple Bar in 1887, tells the story of Angus Macbane, an enigmatic Cambridge scholar whose sardonic wit, fascination with witchcraft and lifelong air of mystery set him apart from everyone around him. Recounted through the eyes of his friend Eliot, what begins as the portrait of an eccentric young man gradually unfolds into a tale of suspicion, supernatural terror and an ancient family curse.

An adaptation of the story aired in the United States in February 1972 as part of Rod Serling's Night Gallery.
