H. St. John Cooper was a popular novelist and a respected show breeder, and Bulldogs and Bulldog Breeding, first published in 1905, is the working handbook he wrote out of that double life. It opens, characteristically, with market value, sale and exchange advertisements, and how to protect yourself from fraud in the canine press - then moves on to the standard as the Bulldog Club of England laid it down, the defects, the Dudley noses and the button ears, the brood bitch and the stud dog, whelping, feeding, kennelling and the diseases of the day.

Over 60 photographs of the champions of the period are reproduced from the original edition, along with the period advertisements for stud dogs and dog food that give the book its particular flavour.
