That scrap — written on horseback by Lieutenant W. W. Cooke, carried off the ridge by the last man to see Custer’s five companies alive — is the last written order the Seventh Cavalry sent from the high ground above the Little Bighorn.

On 25 June 1876 Custer divided the regiment. Reno went into the valley. Benteen rode left. Five companies went north toward a village that did not end. What happened after the note left is built from Lakota and Cheyenne memory, the Reno Court of Inquiry, and the cartridges on a ridge that never gave the country the picture it wanted.

A novel of that afternoon. It does not serve as a shrine to one man, but seeks to honor all involved!
