Borrowed Chords: Guitar Fretboard View

The chords every key can borrow, and how to use them.

A song in C major can use F minor, Ab or Bb and still sound as if it is in C. Those chords come from the modes that share its tonic, and songwriters call this borrowing, or modal interchange. This book shows you the chords each key can borrow, what each one changes, and how to move through them.

What is in it

• Every key: all twelve major keys and all twelve minor keys. • Eight borrowed chords a key, each with its numeral, the modes that lend it, and what it changes in the key's own chord, such as F minor being F major with its A lowered to Ab. • Two places to play each one, with the root at the bottom and the notes you hear under every string. • Four borrowed moves a key: the minor four, the aeolian cadence, the mixolydian turnaround and the borrowed flat three in major keys, and the dorian four, the major five, the Neapolitan and the Picardy ending in minor keys. • What holds and what moves: each move is played on the top three strings with the least movement, and a ladder shows which notes stay and which move.

The chords are chosen by a rule, not by taste, and every shape was found by searching the fretboard for grips a hand can hold.

For guitarists and songwriters who know their chords in a key and want the ones just outside it.
