Black Histories in the Heart of Europe

Black presence in Central Europe and Eastern Europe. Sounds like the setup or punchline for a bad academic joke?

Through a mix of memoir and cultural history, this hybrid work challenges us to rethink what we call "Black history." More than 90 narratives and anecdotes are presented alongside frameworks for considering narrative agency and belonging. An extensive reader's guide also serves to inform and inspire curiosity and exploration.

Identities exist beyond race, ethnicity, and nationality. Encounters occur in contexts beyond slavery, war, and displacement. Connections form beyond intentionality and fate.

History isn't always white or black. Especially when it's Czech, Hungarian, Polish, and Slovak entwined in African, American and other frames.
