Arson Interview Discipline DBT-Informed Fact Checking, Noncoercive Interviewing, Bias Control, and Motive Analysis for Fire Investigators

A fire scene can tell you a great deal. It can also tempt you to tell yourself more than the evidence actually says.

Arson Interview Discipline is a practical field guide for investigators who need to move from scene findings to human information without letting a favorite theory, a dramatic motive, or a suspect's demeanor outrun the facts.

The book focuses on a problem that sits between arson investigation and investigative interviewing: how do you ask better questions, test explanations, control your own bias, and use motive as a lead without turning it into proof?

The answer is a disciplined, information-gathering approach. The book adapts the DBT Check the Facts skill for the investigator's own reasoning, then combines it with noncoercive interview structure, evidence mapping, strategic disclosure, contradiction tracking, and motive testing.

That distinction matters. Investigators are not therapists, and suspects are not clients. The DBT-informed material stays where it belongs: behind the interviewer's eyes, helping the investigator separate observation from interpretation before acting on either. What the reader gets

This is built for the working reality of fire investigation interviewing, not for a seminar room where every witness arrives rested, cooperative, and chronologically gifted.

Inside, readers learn how to: - separate scene evidence, event evidence, and person evidence so one category does not quietly substitute for another; - use a fact–inference–test ledger to expose assumptions before they harden into case theory; - prepare interviews around specific information goals instead of forty-question scripts; - use broad-to-narrow questioning that protects the interviewee's original account; - introduce evidence without turning the room into courtroom theater; - handle anger, silence, resistance, and changing accounts without treating them as automatic proof of deception; - use noncoercive interviewing methods that prioritize reliable information over pressure; - control the familiar traps behind investigator bias control, including confirmation bias and hindsight; - treat firesetting motive analysis as hypothesis testing rather than amateur mind reading; - understand why body language, gaze, fidgeting, and visible nervousness are poor stand-alone lie detectors; - work more cleanly with forensic psychologists, youth firesetting specialists, digital examiners, engineers, counsel, and other subject-matter experts; - triangulate scene findings, records, digital evidence, witness accounts, and suspect statements without inflating the strength of any one source.

Three hypothetical cases show how the method changes across a partnership dispute, a possible series of small fires, and a financially stressed restaurant loss. Each scenario keeps the same rule in view: motive tells you where to look; corroboration tells you what you can say. Why this approach is different

A lot of investigative writing still smuggles certainty into adjectives. A person becomes “evasive.” A business owner becomes “desperate.” A teenager becomes a “thrill seeker.” An inconsistency becomes a “lie.”

Those labels may feel efficient. They also make a case harder to audit.

Arson Interview Discipline shows how to convert loaded impressions back into observable facts and testable propositions. Instead of writing “the subject was evasive,” the investigator records what was asked, what was answered, what changed, and what independent evidence can resolve the difference.
