Fakta

On a bass the arpeggio is not a technique. It is the vocabulary.

A bassist plays the chord one note at a time, and a chord chart that says C#m7b5 tells you nothing about where those four notes live under your hand. This book does: every position of every chord type, drawn at the fret it actually starts on, in all twelve keys, on a four-string bass.

What is in it

• Eleven chord types — major, minor, diminished and augmented triads, then major 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7th, half-diminished, diminished 7th, minor-major 7th and augmented major 7th. • Twelve keys each, chromatically, so you look it up rather than transpose it. • Every position of every one, anchored on each chord tone in turn, low to high — so the last is the first an octave up and the neck closes back on itself. • One climb per chapter, in four-line tab: the whole arpeggio as a single ascending line, each pitch placed exactly once, with its widest stretch printed beside it. • The whole neck first, nut to twelfth fret, with note names and chord degrees on every dot.

The number inside the dot is the whole idea. A 3 is a third wherever it appears, so a shape learned in C is a shape you have in all twelve — and with all twelve already drawn, the transposing is done and what is left is choosing which note to land on, and when.

Symmetric chords are printed in every key on purpose. An augmented triad repeats every four frets and a diminished 7th every three, so the dots land in the same places — but the root does not, and which note is home is exactly what you need when the chord goes past. Each of those chapters names the other keys its shape also draws.

132 chapters across eleven chord types and twelve keys, standard four-string tuning.

For bassists who walk, who comp, and who want to know what the chord behind the root actually is — and for the moment a chart says something the fretboard does not answer.
