Edward Jesse (1780-1868) was deputy surveyor of the royal parks and one of the most widely read natural history writers of his day. Anecdotes of Dogs with Numerous Engravings, first published in 1846, is his affectionate, argumentative gathering of accounts of dogs of every kind - bloodhound and pug, poodle and setter, terrier, spaniel, foxhound, turnspit, beagle, mastiff, bulldog, Dalmatian and lurcher - each story chosen to show something of the animal's mind.

His purpose was practical as well as pleasurable. The more the character of the dog is known, he argued, the better the dog is likely to be treated - and so the book carries chapters on feeding, training and management alongside the tales. The engravings are reproduced from the original edition.
