A Season We Did Not Keep

Helena Ostrowska arrives in winterbound Kraków carrying the burden of a dying mother and the remains of a family life that has already begun to disappear. In the quiet boarding house where they stay, she meets Aleksander Zieliński, a reserved literature teacher whose own losses have taught him to measure every word carefully.

Their connection begins with books. Shared poems, evenings beside the fire, and conversations about language slowly become a refuge from illness, financial uncertainty, and the expectations waiting beyond the walls of the boarding house. Yet affection alone cannot decide the future. When Helena is offered a more secure life in Warsaw, the choices neither of them can make for the other eventually pull them apart.

Years pass. Careers change, responsibilities settle, marriages and losses reshape what once seemed urgent. When Helena and Aleksander unexpectedly meet again in Warsaw, they are no longer the young people who believed love had to choose between sacrifice and survival.

A Season We Did Not Keep is a reflective historical romance about separation, restraint, personal freedom, and two people discovering that love may endure without possession, certainty, or promises made before they are ready.
