Charles Creighton's A History of Epidemics in Britain (Vol. 1&2) is a monumental survey of epidemic disease from the early medieval period through the nineteenth century. Combining chronicle, parish record, medical testimony, and demographic observation, Creighton reconstructs outbreaks of plague, sweating sickness, smallpox, typhus, cholera, influenza, and other scourges within their social and environmental settings. Its style is densely evidentiary, Victorian in amplitude, yet strikingly modern in its insistence that disease belongs to history as much as to medicine. Creighton was a Scottish physician and medical historian whose career joined clinical training with an unusually deep commitment to archival scholarship. Educated in the scientific medicine of his age, he nevertheless distrusted easy orthodoxies, including some contemporary assumptions about contagion and vaccination. That independence, at times controversial, helped shape this work: he sought not merely to catalogue epidemics, but to understand how climate, poverty, urban life, sanitation, trade, and public policy influenced their course. This book is recommended to readers interested in medical history, epidemiology, public health, and the historical experience of crisis. Though some interpretations reflect its nineteenth-century context, its learning, scope, and documentary richness remain indispensable.
