A Farewell to Arms

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Frederic Henry is an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps, drinking his way through a war that has not yet touched him personally. Catherine Barkley is an English nurse at the hospital in Gorizia whose fiancé was blown to pieces on the Somme. What begins between them as a game neither takes seriously becomes the only thing either of them has.

He is wounded by a trench mortar while eating cheese in a dugout and sent to Milan, where she follows him. Then he returns to the front for the retreat from Caporetto: a hundred kilometres of rain, mud, abandoned equipment, and battle police at the bridges shooting officers who have lost their regiments.

Frederic walks away from the war entirely, and the two of them run for Switzerland by rowboat across the lake at night. What waits for them there is not the ending they earned.

First published in 1929, Ernest Hemingway's novel of the Italian front is the book that made his reputation and remains one of the finest love stories and one of the bleakest war novels in American literature. This unabridged audiobook edition presents the complete original text.
