Mange religioner venter på, at Messias en dag vil vende tilbage i kød og blod. Men hvad nu, hvis han slet ikke var menneske - og i stedet var bygget af tandhjul, tuber og kobberledninger?

Præsten John Murray Spears troede på lidt af hvert. Udover sin kristne tro mente han nemlig også, at han havde fået telepatisk kontakt til en forening af afdøde opfindere og filosoffer, som havde en særlig opgave til ham.
