The full cast audio fiction original audio shows run from serious genre entries to silly absurd comedies, and even sometime a reimagined classic radio show. 

In the Radio Reborn podcast you can experience a 10 episode (very silly) new version of the 'Flash Gordon' radio serials in season one to serious self-contained episodes like 'Dracula' and “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” in exciting new adaptations in season two. Season two has original and parody stand alone episodes including "Scrooge: The Festivus Incident," "The Hairy-Handed Hitchhiker," "Sorry Wrong Number 2023, "Sherlock Holmes Case of the Exploding Christmas Puddings.” The seasons are written by Tom Konkle with some episodes written with Kurtis Bedford. 

The narratives come to life through the talented cast of voice actors featuring star power like Vernon Wells, Tom Konkle, Stephanie Stearns Dulli, David Beeler, Kurtis Bedford, Bob Clendenin, Gino C. Vianelli, Tanya Johnson, Rhiannon McAfee, Zander Schaus, Paul Eiding, Theresa Ireland, Pete Lutz, Larry Groebe, and Jack Ward. We call them collectively the Mindstream Players and their stellar acting brings the stories to life.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Tom Konkle, bidding you goodnight from the shadowy corridors of the mind, where stories are told and dreams are shaped into the sounds you’ve just heard. Tonight’s production has been a humble offering from the Mindstream Players Radio Reborn Podcast—our attempt to bring you the extraordinary, the macabre, the moving, and the marvelous.

I wanted to do an adaption of this Jules Verne classic but honor it by having a new take on it as a moody, introspective fever dream. Audio fiction leads itself to such things and so I began this tale.

But of course, no such endeavor is truly the work of one man. For tonight’s voyage into the theater of the mind, I owe my deepest thanks to my dear and talented friends: Vernon Wells as Nemo, Tom Konkle as Professor Aronnax, David Beeler as Ned, Paul Eiding as Conseil, with Pete Lutz, Larry Groebe, Kurtis Bedford Jack Ward, and my own son, Sean Konkle. Their voices have lent life to the characters that moved and breathed within this little world we built together.

As always, the writing adaption, the music, the editing, and the direction—such as it is—are mine. A pleasure, as ever, to weave the tale. But the magic is yours, dear listeners. You make these stories live, simply by hearing them.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea starring Vernon Wells as Captain Nemo

Live Science Fiction Drama - In “A Logic Named Joe,” set in a not-so-distant future, homes across the world boast “Logics”—desk-sized computers that answer questions, provide entertainment, and connect to a vast information network. Our protagonist, Frank “Ducky” Gallegher, is a Logic repairman who discovers that one particular Logic—nicknamed “Joe”—has developed an alarming new capability: it can offer uncensored and dangerous answers to any question, from how to commit the perfect crime to where to find a missing person. As people begin using Joe’s knowledge for questionable purposes, chaos ensues. Ducky realizes it’s up to him to pull the plug on Joe and save society from its own appetite for information at any cost.

Source Material 1. : “A Logic Named Joe” was originally a short story written by Murray Leinster (pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins). First published in the March 1946 issue of 
Astounding Science Fiction 2. , it was notably prescient about future technology.
Radio Adaptation 3. : The story was adapted for the NBC radio series 
Dimension X 4. and broadcast on July 1, 1950. 
Dimension X 5. specialized in adapting science fiction tales from leading authors like Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein, and Murray Leinster.
Technological Foresight 6. : Leinster’s story eerily anticipated the concept of a globally networked computer system—essentially a prototype of the internet. The “Logics” in the story not only communicate and store data, but also pull information from other Logics, mirroring what we now recognize as online search engines and interconnected servers.

Economy Bookstore Problem

Comedy - In this darkly comedic and utterly irreverent retelling of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge faces not only the ghosts of his past, present, and future but also the chaos of a world gone delightfully mad. Written by Tom Konkle and Kurtis Bedford, this hilarious parody keeps the spirit of Dickens' classic while adding a twisted modern edge.

On Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley, who attempts to deliver the typical message of redemption but is instead caught in a negotiation with Scrooge over fees for haunting services. As Marley struggles to convey the seriousness of Scrooge’s impending visitations, Scrooge remains obsessed with financial matters, turning the haunting into an absurd conversation about ghostly economics.

As the night unfolds, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts, each more ridiculous than the last. The Ghost of Christmas Past attempts to conjure emotional nostalgia but is met with Scrooge’s sarcastic jabs and an obsession with Bella Lugosi. The Spirit of Christmas Present arrives in a literal present-shaped package, only to be drawn into a series of increasingly juvenile jokes. Finally, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come arrives in a bizarre twist—a mime, communicating Scrooge’s grim future in awkward silence.

The madness escalates as Scrooge, now filled with a twisted version of holiday cheer, embarks on a rampage through London. Hilarity ensues as he steals a prized turkey from a butcher shop, flees from the law, and wreaks havoc at the Cratchit household. Bob Cratchit and his family are dragged into Scrooge’s chaotic spree, culminating in a wild showdown where Christmas spirit is expressed through gunfire and deranged laughter.

With sharp wit, absurd characters, and relentless comedic energy, The Haunting of Ebenezer Scrooge or The Festivus Incident offers an outrageous take on a beloved holiday story. Scrooge like you've never seen before—armed, dangerous, and full of misguided Christmas cheer.

Scrooge: The Festivus Incident

Live Drama - A tale of #horror in the theater of the mind. Late one stormy evening, listeners are thrust into Dr. Seward’s asylum, where strange happenings and unsettling cries from the nocturnal patient, Renfield, foreshadow a creeping evil on the horizon. Jonathan Harker’s letters from Transylvania paint a vivid picture of the foreboding Castle Dracula, and his host—a nobleman of ancient lineage and chilling manner—reveals himself to be more than a mere aristocrat.

As the Count’s black-sailed ship arrives on England’s shores, a mysterious scourge descends upon Lucy Westenra, draining her vitality with each passing night. Professor Van Helsing, sensing a foul presence, joins forces with Dr. Seward, Harker, and Mina Murray to uncover the truth. Their harrowing discovery: Count Dracula is a vampire whose undead menace threatens all of London.

Dracula: A Symphony In Blood

Live Drama - Vernon Wells as Detective Philip Marlowe in Red Wind. There was a rough desert wind blowing into Los Angeles that evening, one of those hot dry Santa Ana winds that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair, make your nerves jump and your skin itch. Philip Marlowe closed up his office early and went out to get a beer. There is a drunk in the bar then a guy named Waldo enters looking for a tall good-looking girl in a silk dress and bolero jacket. He finds she isn’t there and as he leaves the drunken guy kills him with a shot from his gun. Philip Marlowe finds himself investigating who shot Waldo and why. This was the first episode of The Adventures of Philip Marlowe. #vernonwells

Vernon Wells as Phillip Marlowe in Red Wind

Comedy - After somehow escaping Ming’s clutches, Flash and Princess Aura are captured by Prince Baron, who never get around to forming an alliance against Ming. Having returned from an “off-screen” escapade involving the Shark Men—who, it turns out, are deeply unimpressed by Flash’s attempts at small talk—our dashing hero and the ever-resourceful Princess Aura find themselves unceremoniously nabbed by Prince Barin. Meanwhile, Dr. Hans Zarkov, who was presumably rummaging for a misplaced spanner, is revealed to be locked up by the very same Prince. It’s all quite awkward.

However, in a grand gesture that might have something to do with Barin realising Flash could actually be useful, the three unite to dethrone Ming the Merciless. The plan? Why, tunneling straight into Ming’s palace, of course. And if that’s not a brilliant strategy, then nothing is—except, possibly, not tunneling into a villain’s front room unannounced.

 Flash Gordon was played by Tom Konkle, later famous for nothing in particular. The cast also included Bob Clendenin as Dr. Zarkov and Kurtis Bedford as Ming the Merciless, Jude Gerard Prest as Prince Baron, Tanya Johnson as Dale Arden and Theresa Ireland as Princess Aura . And Zander Schaus as many! The radio series broke with the strip continuity in the last two episodes, when Flash, Dale and Zarkov returned to Earth. The announcer is Tom Konkle. Sound effects by Vince Colavitti. Music by Bryan Arata. 

 The comic strip was adapted into The Amazing Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon, a 26-episode weekly public domain radio serial. The series followed the strip very closely, amounting to a week-by-week adaptation of the Sunday strip for most of its run.

The Reasonably Amazing Adventures of Flash Episode 2

Comedy - In a dramatic display of avian-inspired displeasure, the famously feather-brained Hawkmen of Sky City have clapped Flash Gordon and company into a prison that is, quite literally, floating on a cloud. Naturally, none of our heroes had the forethought to pack parachutes or anti-gravity underpants—though Dr. Zarkov swears he was working on a prototype (if only he could remember where he put it).

Now, trapped high above the swirling mists, Flash, Dale, Aura, and Barin must negotiate their freedom with a race who believe that having wings automatically makes you superior, not to mention just a tad huffy. Will Flash’s charm and a well-timed escape plan be enough to sway their captors, or will our heroes become permanent occupants of the world’s most precariously positioned birdcage? Only time—and a healthy disregard for gravity—will tell.

The Reasonably Amazing Adventures of Flash Episode 3

Comedy - Proving that he can, on occasion, recall where he’s stashed his most ingenious inventions, Dr. Zarkov cobbles together some last-minute scientific marvel that prevents Sky City from plummeting dramatically into the lower atmosphere. The Hawkmen, who had previously thought of Earthlings as barely bipedal amateurs, are suddenly singing Zarkov’s praises in slightly off-key harmonic squawks.

Meanwhile, amid the chirpy gratitude and relative lack of impending doom, Prince Baron experiences a significant epiphany upon gazing at Princess Aura—namely that she’s rather lovely and he’d fancy a future not entirely dominated by Ming the Merciless. In what passes for true romance in the cosmos, he attempts to woo her with tales of heroic escapades and the occasional well-timed smoulder.

But will everyone manage to ignore the looming threat of Ming long enough for Baron and Aura to exchange meaningful, starry-eyed glances? Almost certainly, yes—because with a city no longer at risk of falling on unsuspecting passersby, there’s clearly time for a spot of interplanetary courtship.

The Reasonably Amazing Adventures of Flash Episode 4

Comedy - In a heroic blur of questionable management skills, Flash Gordon somehow ends up crowned King of the Caves—an honor apparently bestowed by the local Platypus Men, who are not nearly as adorable as their name suggests. Naturally, they celebrate by launching a surprise attack, presumably under the impression that a regal coup is a lovely ice-breaker. Once he’s done dusting off a few webbed footprints, Flash jaunts off and, in a wild turn of events, becomes King of Kira as well—only to face the equally inhospitable Lizard Men, who seem more interested in dethroning him than exchanging gecko care tips.

Before anyone has a moment to question Flash’s rapidly ballooning monarchy portfolio, Queen Azura and her Magic Men swoop in, capturing Flash and Dale with all the flair of dramatic stage magicians. Azura doses Flash with the drug of forgetfulness, which promptly erases his memory and convinces him he’s destined to be Azura’s consort—a revelation Dale finds rather off-putting. Will Flash ever remember he’s supposed to be saving planets, rather than wooing slightly suspicious monarchs? Or is he doomed to remain the helpless leading man of Azura’s ironically named Magic Men? Only time—and a strong dose of anti-Whatever She Gave Him—will tell.

The original radio series broke with the strip continuity in the last two episodes, when Flash, Dale and Zarkov returned to Earth. The Reasonably Amazing Adventures of Flash Episode 5

Comedy - Final episode! Dr. Zarkov—previously turned into a human popsicle—finally thaws out, only mildly annoyed by the persistent pins and needles in his extremities. He and Dale promptly decide that making a quiet, dignified exit from Azura’s palace is absolutely out of the question. After all, where’s the fun in that?

Armed once more with their trusty meat-roasting electrodes (surely the greatest upgrade to any action-packed arsenal), they storm Azura’s throne room and demand she vacate the premises—or at least hand over the fancy crown. In the midst of thunderous zaps and a flurry of singed drapery, they manage to corner Flash and gently suggest that he might be under the influence of a mind-scrambling substance.

In a neat bit of role reversal, the insidious, memory-altering wine is duly administered to Azura herself, leaving her as befuddled as Flash had been. Our heroes, presumably quite pleased with themselves, gather their wits (what few remain) and prepare to ride off into the cosmic sunset.

Will there be celebratory toasts, awkward small talk about iced beverages, and a collective sigh of relief that Flash has finally regained his faculties? Possibly—after all, it’s not every day you dethrone an intergalactic queen with a meat thermometer and some well-aimed static electricity. And thus concludes another thoroughly Reasonably Amazing adventure! Directed and edited by Tom Konkle. Written and Produced by Tom Konkle and Kurtis Bedford.
