#3 I thought about my children and my country as I drove out of Alton, skirting East St. Louis, Illinois, where in 1917 white mob violence against black laborers was so catastrophic that terrified locals mistook the trampling hordes for a natural disaster.

#4 St. Louis is a prime example of how an empire can be left behind, and how little people care about it. The city was the host of the 1904 World’s Fair, and its history is largely unknown outside of Missouri.
