“YOU’RE NOT strong enough to take me down, Jeremy,” said the Conjurer, his malevolent voice echoing off the dungeon walls. “You can’t possibly understand the power that I can wield.”

I glared back at him with as much hate as I could muster. It was such a maddening thought that this man could cause such chaos and still be outside my ability to bring him to justice.

And right now, my abilities were severely lacking.

“Perilous Flames!”

The intense heat and pressure of a twice-upgraded spell appeared in my hand, pulsating like a star as I shot it at the old man only to watch him bat it away like it was a fly that had strayed too close.

“Pathetic,” grunted the Conjurer. “Don’t you have anything that I haven’t seen yet?”

“How about this?” I growled. “Mudslide!”

It might have been Calista’s spell, but the whirling vortex of mud and water that appeared was nearly a hundred feet tall. Getting swept into it meant certain death, and when it enveloped the Conjurer’s position, I felt hope for a moment that it might have taken him out.

I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up. As quickly as the vortex appeared, the power inside it was sucked out like a child sipping out of a straw. Seconds later, the Conjurer appeared unarmed and even more powerful as he stretched his arms out.

“Nothing you can do will kill me,” he said, sneering at me. “When will you learn, Jeremy? You have nothing with which to threaten me with. Not even that weak blue garnet.”
